I have to say though, most of the way they get dirty is from the chickens moving the from the ground to the nest boxes and pushing the eggs around with their muddy feet. That’s it! If you don’t wash the eggs, they will be able to be kept on the counter for a month before they start to get old! That’s pretty good!! If the eggs really gross you out when they are dirty, I will wash them for you for $.50 a dozen. Simply rinse them in cool water and scrub with a scotch-brite pad or kitchen scrubber. It is much better to not wash the eggs until you are ready to cook them. DON’T DO THAT! You run the risk of salmonella poisoning even though the egg is fresh and uncracked. Eggs have a semi-permeable shell and oxygen, moisture (and even some germs and icky things!) can move freely back and forth through the shell walls! Some people put the dirty eggs into a sinkful of water and soak them. That’s right! When the chicken lays the egg, at the last stage of making the egg she coats it with a special substance that prevents the air and moisture from escaping the shell. They reward me with some of the best eggs on the planet!ĭid you know that your eggs will last longer if you don’t wash them? The health, happiness and quality of life for my chickens is my top priority. When there isn’t snow, my girls and boys have full access to the outdoors and all the bugs, worms, and plants they can eat and all of the sunshine they can handle! They get lots of fresh well water, calcium supplements in the form of oyster shell, and never any medicines or hormones or vaccines. I currently have around 40 hens of different breeds and 4 roosters so my eggs are most likely fertile. I use only the best local, organic, and GMO free chicken feed available. I started raising my own chickens and eggs two years ago because the eggs from the store were making me sick. Hi! My name is Sandy and we are Golden Feather Farm!
